First Lines Fridays is a weekly feature for book lovers hosted by Wandering Words. What if instead of judging a book by its cover, its author or its prestige, we judged it by its opening lines?
- Pick a book off your shelf (it could be your current read or on your TBR) and open to the first page.
- Copy the first few lines, but don’t give anything else about the book away just yet – you need to hook the reader first.
- Finally… reveal the book!
Happy Friday! Do you have anything fun planned for the weekend? I’m spending Saturday doing some Christmas shopping at Cheshire Oaks, and then heading to Chester Zoo for there Lanterns show, I’ve seen some pictures on their Facebook and it looks really fun I’m just keeping my fingers crossed the rain will hold off while were walking round. For this weeks first lines I’ve chosen a 2022 sequel that I really, really struggled to put down after checking out the first few lines. It’s an epic sci-fi, filled with a bunch of brilliantly written female characters, and with how much I loved book one I’m sure this will end up being a 5 star read!
“It was harder to steal supplies when the whole fucking galaxy wanted Eris and her crew dead. And she was really, really trying not to kill anyone.”
I had so much fun reading the first book in this series, and can’t wait to return to this… galaxy and the characters that inherit it. Any guesses as to what it is??
After an ambush leaves the Novantae resistance in tatters, the survivors scatter across the galaxy. Wanted by two great empires, the bounty on any rebel’s head is enough to make a captor filthy rich. And the seven devils? Biggest score of them all. To avoid attacks, the crew of Zelus scavenge for supplies on long-abandoned Tholosian outposts.
Not long after the remnants of the rebellion settle briefly on Fortuna, Ariadne gets a message with unimaginable consequences: the Oracle has gone rogue. In a planned coup against the Empire’s new ruler, the AI has developed a way of mass programming citizens into mindless drones. The Oracle’s demand is simple: the AI wants its daughter back at any cost.
Time for an Impossible to Infiltrate mission: high chance of death, low chance of success. The devils will have to use their unique skills, no matter the sacrifice, and pair up with old enemies. Their plan? Get to the heart of the Empire. Destroy the Oracle. Burn it all to the ground.
That does sound fun! And ooh Elizabeth May- is that the same Elizabeth May from The Falconer? I’ll have to go look…

Yes! It’s the same Elizabeth May… and you’ve reminded me that I really need to pick up that series 😂.
Oop, definitely didn’t guess this one (thought it was something else completely different haha) but I do want to read the first book in this series! I’ve only heard great things about it 😍
