How often do you give a book 5 stars?
If you’d have asked me this a few years ago it would have been pretty much anytime I enjoyed a book, but my time blogging has made me a much more critical reader and now I find myself giving them out less and less. For me it has to have the perfect blend of elements; characters, well paced plot, world building as well as a few plot twists to keep me hooked. I still probably give them out a little too easily, but they genuinely are books that I’ve loved and could find nothing wrong with.
What draws you to a book?
I feel like i’m pretty easy to please tbh. There are so many things that will draw me too a book:
- A Pretty cover
- A gang of characters
- A new fantasy world for me to discover
- Romance
There’s probably a tonne more, but those are some of the ones that stand out to me.
Who is your favourite book character?
Ack! Only one?!? Since I’ve just finished Out Violent Delights I’ll have to go with Juliette Cai. She’s the perfect blend of stabby, snarky and sincere that I just love in a character, and her growth in the second book was just phenomenal.
Which book character do you hate with a passion?
Ooof this is another hard one! I might have to go with Bero from the Green Bone Saga, he’s such a little cockroach and set into motion a chain of events that nearly destroyed all my faves in No Peak. I’m really hoping he’ll get his just deserts in the final book.
Do you prefer books that are character-driven or plot-driven?
100% character driven. You could give me a book with the most basic and predictable plot but if the characters are well written? Well then I couldn’t really care less. The strength of the characters decide whether I enjoy a book or not & as much as I do care about the plot, I care about them a lot more.
Do you have a comfort book?
I have comfort books… I have a few books that I use to get me out of reading slumps, or pick up if I’m feeling a little low. These tend to be fast paced fantasy/ romance reads that I’ve read before and just know I’ll enjoy. Basically anything by Jill Mansell, as well as Rebel in the Sands by Alwyn Hamilton.
Do your reading habits change with the seasons?
I don’t think so. I do get the idea that there are books that just fit a season, but if I enjoy it I can read it whenever.
What’s a book that made you sob?
Hahahaha soo many. One that springs to mind is The House in the Cerulean Sea, but they were happy as well as sad tears. One that had be sobbing was The Kite Runner, which I made the mistake of reading at work… let’s just say I learnt my lesson there.
What’s a book that you would recommend to everyone?
Oooh that a toughie because I like to try and personalise my recommendation’s based on what people enjoy. But if I can only pick one, I’d go with These Violent Delights by Chloe Gong. I’m still a little amazed that this is a debut series and I love everything about it.
Do you like to read in silence or do you listen to music?
Silence. I don’t mind TV in the background as long as it’s something I’m not fussed about watching, but I have the attention span of a toddler and find it very hard to concentrate with any background noise.
What’s your favourite genre?
Fantasy, without a doubt. I just love travelling to new worlds, or even seeing our own with the addition of magic. It really helps me escape from the mundane day to day, as well as allowing me to learn about other cultures folklore and mythology.
My Questions!
- What was your last 5 star read?
- What 2022 release are you most looking forward too?
- What’s your favourite genre, and the one book you would recommend from it?
- Do you have any hobbies outside of reading?
- What is your favourite fictional pairing? (Romantic or Platonic)
- Whats the last book that made you laugh out loud?
- What are you currently reading?
- What hyped book did you end up not loving?
- What attracts you to a book?
- What do you enjoy most about blogging?
- Do you have any pets? (if yes then pictures please!)

I love your answers! I have many comfort books too. And I adore Juliette and The These Violent Delights duology. I feel like I’m very easy to please so I give out a lot of 5 star reviews, but have to agree that my blog has made me more critical and I give out less than I used to, but still quite a lot!

Thanks & thanks again for the tag! I really enjoyed answering your questions. Glad I’m not the only fan of Juliette, or the only one who gives out 5* reviews a little too easy 🤦♀️😂

Thanks so much for the tag, Becky! I still have to read The House in the Cerulean Sea, but I read Under the Whispering Door and adored it.

Thanks for the tag, Becky! I loved reading your answers 😍 I can relate to so many of your answers. I definitely give a lot fewer five stars ever since I started blogging, Bero is literally the worst (why does he live through everything?!), and characters really do have the power to make/break a story! Also, reading the Kite Runner at work?! 😂 I can’t even imagine! Haha, I would’ve lost my shit so completely, that book is heartbreaking to the extreme! I definitely need to get cracking on reading TVD, eh? I’ve been seeing so many amazing things about the final book!

You’re welcome, Dini! Bero is the absolute worst, I’m really hoping he gets killed in the last book 😂 and yea, reading The Kite Runner at work wasn’t the best idea I’ll admit. You’re gonna love TVD, it’s absolutely brilliant 😊

Thank you so much for the tag!
Character-driven books are so wonderful, always such incredible reads. It’s so much fun to kind of take a break from real life and follow along with someone new to explore their world and what’s happening. They’re also so much more organic and natural, though my favorite is I never feel like I’m left scratching my head at why a character did or didn’t do something. That totally knocks me out of the story!

You’re welcome! And yes the best kind of character-driven is when you feel like you know the characters so well that all of the decisions feel natural! Can’t wait to read your answers 😊

Thank you for the tag, Becky! 😊 I give five stars a lot less often than I used to as well – I have become quite the critical reader lol. And I agree with These Violent Delights, just such a spectacular book and I can’t wait to read the second one.
