First Lines Fridays is a weekly feature for book lovers hosted by Wandering Words. What if instead of judging a book by its cover, its author or its prestige, we judged it by its opening lines?
- Pick a book off your shelf (it could be your current read or on your TBR) and open to the first page
- Copy the first few lines, but don’t give anything else about the book away just yet – you need to hook the reader first
- Finally… reveal the book!

Happy Friday! For today’s First Lines Friday post I’m highlighting a book by a favourite author of mine, it’s the first in a series all about a witch who tries to rid herself of power and instead makes her whole family disappear. It sounds really interesting & hopefully I will be able to pick it up soon.
“The second time I saw my dead aunt Rosaria, she was dancing.”
Well, I don’t know about you but I’m certainly intrigued! Ready to find out what it is?

Alex is a bruja, the most powerful witch in a generation…and she hates magic.
At her Deathday celebration, Alex performs a spell to rid herself of her power. But it backfires. Her whole family vanishes into thin air, leaving her alone with Nova, a brujo boy she’s not sure she can trust, but who may be Alex’s only chance at saving her family.
