Guilty Pleasure Reads – Top 5 Saturday!

I wouldn’t really say I have books I would class as a ‘guilty pleasure’ but I do have books/series that I always find myself coming back too. Whether because I need to get out of a reading slump, I’m in the mood for some swoon worth romance (which luckily all of the below have in common), or just fancy reading something a little lighter than usual. The below books never fail to cheer me up and I have read them all multiple times.

Thanks to Mandy over at Devouring books  for creating these amazing prompts! You should definitely go check her blog out because she posts some great content.

Rebel of the Sands

Mortals rule the desert nation of Miraji, but mythical beasts still roam the wild and remote areas, and rumor has it that somewhere, djinn still perform their magic.  For humans, it’s an unforgiving place, especially if you’re poor, orphaned, or female.

Amani Al’Hiza is all three. She’s a gifted gunslinger with perfect aim, but she can’t shoot her way out of Dustwalk, the back-country town where she’s destined to wind up wed or dead.

Then she meets Jin, a rakish foreigner, in a shooting contest, and sees him as the perfect escape route. But though she’s spent years dreaming of leaving Dustwalk, she never imagined she’d gallop away on mythical horse—or that it would take a foreign fugitive to show her the heart of the desert she thought she knew.

Air Awakens

A library apprentice, a sorcerer prince, and an unbreakable magic bond…

The Solaris Empire is one conquest away from uniting the continent, and the rare elemental magic sleeping in seventeen-year-old library apprentice Vhalla Yarl could shift the tides of war.

Vhalla has always been taught to fear the Tower of Sorcerers, a mysterious magic society, and has been happy in her quiet world of books. But after she unknowingly saves the life of one of the most powerful sorcerers of them all—the Crown Prince Aldrik—she finds herself enticed into his world. Now she must decide her future: Embrace her sorcery and leave the life she’s known, or eradicate her magic and remain as she’s always been. And with powerful forces lurking in the shadows, Vhalla’s indecision could cost her more than she ever imagined.

Vampire Academy

Lissa Dragomir is a Moroi princess: a mortal vampire with a rare gift for harnessing the earth’s magic. She must be protected at all times from Strigoi; the fiercest vampires – the ones who never die. The powerful blend of human and vampire blood that flows through Rose Hathaway, Lissa’s best friend, makes her a dhampir. Rose is dedicated to a dangerous life of protecting Lissa from the Strigoi, who are hell-bent on making Lissa one of them.

After two years of freedom, Rose and Lissa are caught and dragged back to St. Vladimir’s Academy, a school for vampire royalty and their guardians-to-be, hidden in the deep forests of Montana. But inside the iron gates, life is even more fraught with danger… and the Strigoi are always close by.

Rose and Lissa must navigate their dangerous world, confront the temptations of forbidden love, and never once let their guard down, lest the evil undead make Lissa one of them forever…

Rumour Has It

When newly single Tilly Cole impulsively quits her London job for a fresh start in the small town of Roxborough she finds she’s arrived in a hotbed of gossip, intrigue and rampant rivalry for the most desirable men. Tilly has no intention of joining in – she’s just happy with her new Girl Friday job. Then she meets Jack Lucas. Jack is irresistible… and he’s got his eye on Tilly. But there are shocking rumours about his wicked reputation. Tilly doesn’t want to be just another notch on anyone’s bedpost. But is she being mature and sensible – or is she running away from the love of her life?

A Court of Thorns and Roses

Feyre’s survival rests upon her ability to hunt and kill – the forest where she lives is a cold, bleak place in the long winter months. So when she spots a deer in the forest being pursued by a wolf, she cannot resist fighting it for the flesh. But to do so, she must kill the predator and killing something so precious comes at a price …

Dragged to a magical kingdom for the murder of a faerie, Feyre discovers that her captor, his face obscured by a jewelled mask, is hiding far more than his piercing green eyes would suggest. Feyre’s presence at the court is closely guarded, and as she begins to learn why, her feelings for him turn from hostility to passion and the faerie lands become an even more dangerous place. Feyre must fight to break an ancient curse, or she will lose him forever.

  1. OOH! I loved Vampire Academy! That series is totally a guilty pleasure for me. I binge read the entire series in like three days and then I read the spin off series Bloodlines and loved it even more somehow!

I’ve also heard good things about the Air Awakens series and want to give that a chance. I did read ACOTAR but I feel like my opinion was heavily influenced by some negative reviews that I read. I recently gave Sarah J Maas a second chance and really enjoyed the first two books in the Throne of Glass series. I can see how her ACOTAR series could be a guilty pleasure series, but I feel like those books are too long for what I really consider “guilty pleasure” reads.

    • Haha I LOVE Bloodlines so much! I did the same as you and just went into it straight from VA and was not disappointed.

TOG is awesome too & it is one epic series… all I’m gonna say is don’t get too attached to any of the characters 👀👀

      • Some people say that the beginnings are a little too similar, but hey, if it’s anything like VA I’ll probably enjoy it. I just loved that series SO much! I miss it! I love paranormal books with boarding school settings so much! I recently binge read the entire Beautiful Creatures series and have been looking for something similar. I love the southern gothic kind of thing and also paranormal romance makes me so nostalgic. I’m on the lookout for great YA paranormal books. If they also happen to have gothic vibes and are set in the south I’m pretty much gonna read it right away lol.

  2. I used to have a lot of “guilty pleasures” but the more I thought about it the more I rebelled at the thought 😂 Why should I feel guilty if I enjoy something (that doesn’t do harm to others) just because others might not think or feel the same about it?! Lol
I’ve seen the Air Awakens series on Kindle for a while now and I always get pulled to it because of that cover! I’m gonna have to give it a try 😍 Great post!

    • Completely agree with you there Dini! It’s why I said they’re not really ‘guilty pleasures’ cause I like them, but I get that not everyone will.
Air awakens is really fun and incredibly fast paced, I did all the books in a week which is a lot for me… and it has a slow burn and angsty romance 👀👀
