First Lines Fridays is a weekly feature for book lovers hosted by Wandering Words. What if instead of judging a book by its cover, its author or its prestige, we judged it by its opening lines?
- Pick a book off your shelf (it could be your current read or on your TBR) and open to the first page
- Copy the first few lines, but don’t give anything else about the book away just yet – you need to hook the reader first
- Finally… reveal the book!
Happy Friday! I’m back to spotlight another book off my never ending TBR! This one had me intrigued from the premise alone. I recently read another book by the same author and adored it so I have high hopes for this when I eventually get round to reading it!
At four in the morning, I was woken by a phone call from my younger brother. He sounded breathless, panicked, with the particular catch in his throat I knew all too well.
“Uriah Heep’s loose on the ninth floor,” he said. “And I can’t catch him.”
You might be able to hazard a guess at this one, but i’m definitely intrigued! Ready to find out what it is?

For his entire life, Charley Sutherland has concealed a magical ability he can’t quite control: he can bring characters from books into the real world. His older brother, Rob — a young lawyer with a normal house, a normal fiancee, and an utterly normal life — hopes that this strange family secret will disappear with disuse, and he will be discharged from his life’s duty of protecting Charley and the real world from each other. But then, literary characters start causing trouble in their city, making threats about destroying the world… and for once, it isn’t Charley’s doing.
There’s someone else who shares his powers. It’s up to Charley and a reluctant Rob to stop them, before these characters tear apart the fabric of reality.

Oh to have that magical ability! Imagine the potential bookish friends you could bring to life? What character would you bring to the real world first Becky? This sounds like an awesome book – I can’t believe I haven’t heard of it before. Thanks for sharing Becky 🙂 – Jen

Ooooh that’s a really good question and I have no idea! There are just too many choices haha who would you pick?
I was the same, as soon as I found out it was about people being brought to life from books I was sold!

Oh it’s not an easy choice at all! I think perhaps a fun character such as Fin from Aurora Rising? I’d spend DAYS trying to make the real decision though, haha.

Haha Fin would be a great choice! But yea, I would definitely agonise over it for a bit 😂

This has been on my TBR ever since I read Sammie’s review for it last year. It sounds soo good 😀 Makes me want to start reading it right now (even though I started 3 books since yesterday LOL)! Great pick 😀
