First Lines Fridays is a weekly feature for book lovers hosted by Wandering Words. What if instead of judging a book by its cover, its author or its prestige, we judged it by its opening lines?
- Pick a book off your shelf (it could be your current read or on your TBR) and open to the first page
- Copy the first few lines, but don’t give anything else about the book away just yet – you need to hook the reader first
- Finally… reveal the book!
Happy weekend everyone! June has started off with a bang, i’m already on my 3rd book of the month and i’m excited that its another buddy read I’m doing with Susan over at Novel Lives. The book I’m choosing to highlight is the first in a series set in an alternative future London filled with people with clairvoyant abilities and a government seeking to find and control them all. I’m seriously over due a re-read of these books, especially since the next one is out next year.
I like to imagine there were more of us in the beginning. Not many, I suppose. But more than there are now.
Intriguing right? This is such an immersive and brilliantly written series. Ready to find out what it is??

The year is 2059. Nineteen-year-old Paige Mahoney is working in the criminal underworld of Scion London, based at Seven Dials, employed by a man named Jaxon Hall. Her job: to scout for information by breaking into people’s minds. For Paige is a dreamwalker, a clairvoyant and, in the world of Scion, she commits treason simply by breathing.
It is raining the day her life changes for ever. Attacked, drugged and kidnapped, Paige is transported to Oxford – a city kept secret for two hundred years, controlled by a powerful, otherworldly race. Paige is assigned to Warden, a Rephaite with mysterious motives. He is her master. Her trainer. Her natural enemy. But if Paige wants to regain her freedom she must allow herself to be nurtured in this prison where she is meant to die.
