First Lines Friday!

First Lines Fridays is a weekly feature for book lovers hosted by Wandering Words. What if instead of judging a book by its cover, its author or its prestige, we judged it by its opening lines?

  • Pick a book off your shelf (it could be your current read or on your TBR) and open to the first page
  • Copy the first few lines, but don’t give anything else about the book away just yet – you need to hook the reader first
  • Finally… reveal the book!

It’s the weekend! My weekend is going to be filled with reading, watching the rugby and trying to get donations for a charity event I am hosting… so not as relaxing as I would like. I do have an absolutely amazing book on the go though and I am hoping to finish it off soon. Do you have any plans for the weekend? Or are you just chilling out with your current read? Let me know in the comments.

This week first line is from a favourite series of mine. I recently read the last book and it destroyed me ( if anyone of you have read my posts you might already have a clue what it is!) Filled to the brim with Japanese folklore and one of my all time favourite literary squads. Ready to make your guess?

“It was raining the day Suki came to the Palace and of the Sun, and it was raining the night that she died.”

Are you intrigued? You should be! Ready to find out what it is?

Raised by monks in the isolated Silent Winds temple, Yumeko has trained all her life to hide her yokai nature. Half kitsune, half human, her skill with illusion is matched only by her penchant for mischief. Until the day her home is burned to the ground, her adoptive family is brutally slain and she is forced to flee for her life with the temple’s greatest treasure—one part of the ancient scroll.

There are many who would claim the dragon’s wish for their own. Kage Tatsumi, a mysterious samurai of the Shadow Clan, is one such hunter, under orders to retrieve the scroll…at any cost. Fate brings Kage and Yumeko together. With a promise to lead him to the scroll, an uneasy alliance is formed, offering Yumeko her best hope for survival. But he seeks what she has hidden away, and her deception could ultimately tear them both apart.

With an army of demons at her heels and the unlikeliest of allies at her side, Yumeko’s secrets are more than a matter of life or death. They are the key to the fate of the world itself.

If you like fantasy, folklore, romance and a great and quirky literary squad then this is the series for you! I cannot recommend it enough, and I’m still not quite over the ending of the last book! Have you read this one yet? Let me know your thoughts.

  1. Haha okay, I only recognised this because you’d mentioned the series in a few posts before 😂Love those first lines though! Will definitely pick up this series. Hope you have a great weekend despite not being as relaxing as you’d like!
