First Lines Friday!

First Lines Fridays is a weekly feature for book lovers hosted by Wandering Words. What if instead of judging a book by its cover, its author or its prestige, we judged it by its opening lines?

  • Pick a book off your shelf (it could be your current read or on your TBR) and open to the first page
  • Copy the first few lines, but don’t give anything else about the book away just yet – you need to hook the reader first
  • Finally… reveal the book!

Happy Friday everyone!I’m going on an adventure. I’m currently on a plane to Porto, Portugal thanks to my friend who treated me to a weekend away for my Birthday. I am so excited because I’ve never visited Portugal before and this is the place with the Harry Potter bookshop… There might be a post around this next week if I get some nice photos. I probably won’t get much reading done though which is a bit of a pain as I have signed up to around 4 blog tours this month on top on my ARC backlog… I have no self control. What are your plans for the weekend?

The book I’ve chosen for this week is one I was gifted last year and, though I haven’t got around to reading it yet I recently leant it to my friend and she loved it, so I’m hoping to bump it up my TBR.

“Can you come into my office?”

I look around at the desks beside me and then back at Frankie, trying to confirm to whom, exactly, she’s talking. I point to myself “Do you mean me?”

Any guesses? This is a book that took over twitter last year and I saw so many rave review for it. Ready to find out what it is?

Aging and reclusive Hollywood movie icon Evelyn Hugo is finally ready to tell the truth about her glamorous and scandalous life. But when she chooses unknown magazine reporter Monique Grant for the job, no one is more astounded than Monique herself. Why her? Why now? Monique is not exactly on top of the world. Her husband has left her, and her professional life is going nowhere. Regardless of why Evelyn has selected her to write her biography, Monique is determined to use this opportunity to jumpstart her career.

Summoned to Evelyn’s luxurious apartment, Monique listens in fascination as the actress tells her story. From making her way to Los Angeles in the 1950s to her decision to leave show business in the ’80s, and, of course, the seven husbands along the way, Evelyn unspools a tale of ruthless ambition, unexpected friendship, and a great forbidden love. Monique begins to feel a very real connection to the legendary star, but as Evelyn’s story near its conclusion, it becomes clear that her life intersects with Monique’s own in tragic and irreversible ways. The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo is a mesmerizing journey through the splendor of old Hollywood into the harsh realities of the present day as two women struggle with what it means–and what it costs–to face the truth.

This sounds really intriguing and after all the rave reviews I have high hopes. I’m hoping to get to this in the next few months I just need a little Netgalley control! Have a lovely weekend.
