First Lines Friday!

First Lines Fridays is a weekly feature for book lovers hosted by Wandering Words. What if instead of judging a book by its cover, its author or its prestige, we judged it by its opening lines?

  • Pick a book off your shelf (it could be your current read or on your TBR) and open to the first page
  • Copy the first few lines, but don’t give anything else about the book away just yet – you need to hook the reader first
  • Finally… reveal the book!

Happy Friday everyone! My weekend is totally free atm and I intend to spend it reading and binge-watching Grace and Frankie season 3 on Netflix… that’s it. I love having plan free weekends, being able to curl up on the couch in my pj’s, no makeup, crazy hair knowing that I don’t have to make an effort. Do you have any plans over the weekend?

I’m going to continue my current theme and take the first line from the book I’m currently reading. This one isn’t out until early Feb, but I’ve seen some amazing reviews, and with what I have read of it so far I have high hopes.

This day is made for sailing.

The oceans brine coats my tongue and I savour its grit. Late summers heat has beaten the sea into submission; it barely sways as I stand against the starboard ledge.

I’ve actually not read that many books with pirates/mermaids, both of which this book contains and I am eager to read more. Ready to find out what it is??

As princess of the island kingdom Visidia, Amora Montara has spent her entire life training to be High Animancer—the master of souls. The rest of the realm can choose their magic, but for Amora, it’s never been a choice. To secure her place as heir to the throne, she must prove her mastery of the monarchy’s dangerous soul magic.

When her demonstration goes awry, Amora is forced to flee. She strikes a deal with Bastian, a mysterious pirate: he’ll help her prove she’s fit to rule, if she’ll help him reclaim his stolen magic.

But sailing the kingdom holds more wonder—and more peril—than Amora anticipated. A destructive new magic is on the rise, and if Amora is to conquer it, she’ll need to face legendary monsters, cross paths with vengeful mermaids, and deal with a stow-away she never expected… or risk the fate of Visidia and lose the crown forever.

It sounds amazing right? After reading rave reviews, and the few pages i’ve managed to get through so far I cant wait to dive in fully this weekend (pardon the pun)!
