Books that make me LOL – Top 5 Saturday!

Funny books have put me in some pretty awkward situations. I’ve snorted on a full train and been caught laughing out loud at work when my boss didn’t realise I was reading. But despite all that I am a huge lover of funny books, whether they contain snarky characters with wit off the chart, dark humour, or seem like they shouldn’t be funny and are actually hilarious. This weeks Top 5 Saturday is all about funny books, and I have some absolute crackers for you!

The Martian

“It’s true, you know. In space, no one can hear you scream like a little girl.”

This is one of those books that when you read the premise, you would never to imagine it to be a ‘funny’ read. I expected it to be heartbreaking and on the edge of my seat with tension, and though it definitely contained those, the author manages to break it up with some brilliantly witty and sometimes macabre humour.

Doing Time

“I said with confidence, “They’re not going to take someone like me.” “With the right inducements, they would take even someone like you.” I thought the ‘even’ was a little bit offensive and said so.”

I read this earlier in the year and have never found a book so utterly British. A brilliant bunch of misfit characters who win by pretty much failing there way through life, with some top notch British humour, this makes for the start of a promising series.

The Devils Apprentice

” No one enjoy’s irony as much as fate does.” he said. “I chose the most rotten and mean-spirited brat that I could find, and what happens? The boy spoils it all be BEING rotten and mean spirited!

This is another book I did not expect to be funny, but the author manages to weave some dark and witty humour into the story to make for a dark and entertaining read.

Traitors Blade

“When you’re fighting a crowd, it’s good to shout potentially threatening things like “Crossbows!” or “Fire!” or “Giant Flying Cat!” every once in a while.”

Honestly, this is one of my favourite series. If you like a great ‘gang’ of characters, ones that fail at pretty much everything, but do it with style then this is the series for you. Falcio, Kest and Brasti are my boys and I would die to be a greatcoat.

Rivers of London

“ I gave the prescribed Metropolitan Police “first greeting”.
“Oi!” I said “What do you think you’re doing?”

Another hilarious British series. I first picked this up when I saw it being described as The Bill mixed with Harry Potter, and the description pretty much nails it. I love the blend of the modern and the magical and it contains some utterly brilliant one liners.

So those are my top 5 funny books. Some others that deserve a mention are Lord of Secrets, Nevernight, Six of Crows and Truthwitch.
