First Lines Friday!

First Lines Fridays is a weekly feature for book lovers hosted by Wandering Words. What if instead of judging a book by its cover, its author or its prestige, we judged it by its opening lines?

  • Pick a book off your shelf (it could be your current read or on your TBR) and open to the first page
  • Copy the first few lines, but don’t give anything else about the book away just yet – you need to hook the reader first
  • Finally… reveal the book!

Its December! This year has absolutely flown by, but I’ve been super prepared and already bought all my Christmas presents… go me. For the month of December I’m going to use this post to spotlight a few of the books on my Christmas wishlist. Have you got any books on your Christmas lists?

I should have died when I was seven. Any ordinary child would have. But it was many years before I would realise how far from ordinary I truly was.

Well I’m definitely looking forward to picking this one up. Any ideas what it is???

Zhilan was assigned female at birth; despite an unusual gift for illusions, they know they will live out their life in the perfumed confines of the women’s quarters. But when civil war sets the country aflame, Zhilan is the only one who can save their disabled Father from death on the battlefield.

By taking his place.

Surviving brutal army training as a male recruit – Zhi – is only the first challenge. Soon Zhi’s unique talents draw them into an even more perilous fight, in the glittering court of the Land of Dragons, where love and betrayal are two sides of the same smile. The fate of an Empire rests on Zhi’s shoulders. But to win, they must first decide where their loyalty, and their heart, truly belongs.

This book is giving me serious Mulan vibes, and just look at that cover! This is one I seriously hope I find under the tree come Christmas day.
