First Lines Fridays is a weekly feature for book lovers hosted by Wandering Words. What if instead of judging a book by its cover, its author or its prestige, we judged it by its opening lines?
- Pick a book off your shelf (it could be your current read or on your TBR) and open to the first page
- Copy the first few lines, but don’t give anything else about the book away just yet – you need to hook the reader first
- Finally… reveal the book!
I’ve chosen to focus this first lines Friday on a 2020 release you should all add to your TBR’s instantly. Steeped in Inuit folklore, with a fantastically written heroine and some truly amazing world building. I flew through this book in a matter of hours and will definitely be getting a physical copy once it is released.
A white silence blanketed the land. Newly fallen snow, hushed. Pure, crystalline ice hardening against the pale bark of the trees. The chilled air that swelled with the slow, sleeping breaths of a wold that had yet to wake.
And a girl cloaked in heavy furs, waiting.
Ready to find out what it is?
I’m not lying when I say you should add this to your TBR’s asap! A fully immersive fantasy world built around some truly fascinating Inuit folklore, with face stealing demons and a girl that would go to any lengths to bring back her sisters chance at life. I can’t tell you how much I enjoyed this book, but keep your eyes peeled because my review is due in the next few days.
