We’ve all been there right? We have heard that many raving review‘s about a book, seen that many people screaming about it on twitter that we just think… can it actually be that good. Sometimes I feel that things can be hyped too much, I go in with waay too high expectations and it just doesn’t meet them. I’m really bad for putting things off if I feel like it wont live up to the hype, not just with books, but films and TV series. That being said, I tend to wait for the raving and screaming to die down and then try and pick up the book. Most of these have been on my TBR for years, but I’m just really scared that they wont be as good as everyone says they are! Have you read any of these? Let me know your thoughts, good or bad!
This weeks Top Ten Tuesday was all about books you have on your TBR that you haven’t picked up and why. What are some of the reasons you haven’t picked up certain books on your TBR?
Top Ten Tuesday is run by Jana over at That Artsy Reader Girl and you should definitely go give her blog some love.

The Night Circus – Erin Morgenstern
This is one that I actually tried to read and DNF. I’m not sure whether I wasn’t in the right head space, or it simply wasn’t up my street but all those raving reviews cant be wrong right? I will definitely be giving this one a second chance, especially with her next book due out which I had already pre-ordered.
Illuminae – Jay Kristoff & Amie Kaufman
I know, I know! I love Nevernight, and Aurora Rising was one of my favourite books of the year so far. I’m not sure whats putting me off this one, whether it is the format or the fact that it cant be as good as everyone is saying! Either way, I’m hoping to have read at least the first book in the series before the end of the year.
Strange The Dreamer – Laini Taylor
I liked Daughter of Smoke and Bone, but I didn’t love it. Despite that I bought this book based on the premise alone, and not how much I liked the authors previous works. I’m hoping that when I eventually get round to this one I will enjoy it as much as everyone else has.
The Fifth Season – N.K. Jemisin
This was actually on my TBR long before I had heard any hype about it, but recently its been all over my twitter and I have seen a few reviews saying how amazing it was. I already own the first 2 books, so I will be starting this series at some point, and it does sound like its something I would enjoy.
Ember in the Ashes – Sabaa Tahir
I’ve decided after hearing all the drama around this series that I’m going to wait until its finished to start it. I had enough of an emotional wait with the TOG series, and I’m not 100% sure I could go through that again! It does look awesome though, and I can see it being a hard series to put off.
So that’s my top few books I’m afraid wont live up to the hype. Did any of these make your lists, or are you one of the people I have seen raving about them? Let me know 😀

Nice list! Illuminae is on mine as well, and I’m also hoping to read it by the end of the year. And I didn’t list Strange the Dreamer on mine, but that’s also one I’ve been holding off on for a long time.

Yea they’re both a bit daunting tbh with all the rave reviews flying around. Glad I’m not the only one who feels that way 😆

Shoot I don’t even know what the drama is surrounding Ember! I think holding off on it until the series is done is a good idea though ❤

None of these made my top 10 list, but if it was like a top 20, theyd all be on there. I also DNFed Night Circus! There really just wasn’t anything happening and it was in the middle of a readathon so i gave up on it momentarily

Haha! Yea I felt the same about Night Circus. I’m planning on trying it again though, cause all those people can’t be wrong right? 😆

I love illuminae and the formatting actually makes it a much quicker read but I’m sure you have already heard that 😂, wasn’t a fan of an ember in the ashes🙈. Great post!

Haha glad you liked the formatting! And you’re actually the first person I’ve come across who didn’t like Ember, so thanks… you’ve tempered my expectations a little bit 😆

I haven’t read STD (oh crap! There is another STD book lol) because I was told that my SOC love would lead me to it but I also heard it is romance heavy? So I dunno.🤦♀️
Fifth Season is Fifth Season

Oooh! I’d not heard it was like SOC! That might make me pick it up sooner. I really want to read fifth season before it get made into a series/movie… can’t remember which one it was 🙈

READ ILLUMINAE. Omg please read it!
I had absolutely zero expectations when I read it, and at first I wasn’t sure about the format either because I couldn’t see how there would be a plot line through a bunch of files.
It blew my mind!
Night Circus is defo on my list, tho XD. Like you I started it but dnf but I do want to give it another shot. Just so many books out there!

Omg I put off Strange the Dreamer for SO LONG for this exact reason – I was scared of the hype! But I read it a few months ago & it honestly EXCEEDS my expectations, which I didn’t think was possible?!
Heh heh, Illuminae has been on my TBR forever & a day as well & I just can’t understand why I haven’t read it yet!!
