First Lines Fridays is a weekly feature for book lovers hosted by Wandering Words. What if instead of judging a book by its cover, its author or its prestige, we judged it by its opening lines?
- Pick a book off your shelf (it could be your current read or on your TBR) and open to the first page
- Copy the first few lines, but don’t give anything else about the book away just yet – you need to hook the reader first
- Finally… reveal the book!
This week I’ve chosen to feature one of my favourite Sci-Fi books. I found this book both hilarious and heartbreaking, and I managed to learn a little while I was reading.
I’m pretty much fucked. That’s my considered opinion. Fucked.
Well? Are you intrigued yet, because you should be. Ready to find out what it is?

This is one of my all time favourite reads! If you’re looking for a fantastically written Sci-Fi novel, with a hilariously witty main character and astrophysics you can actually understand then this is the book for you.
